What We Do
According to government
statistics there are still 9 million
people in the United Kingdom living in poverty. It takes just one loss
of a paycheck, a delay in benefits or an unexpected bill to bring many
people into crisis so they are unable to buy food for their family.
This is a new and horrifying nightmare for many of these people and the
welfare state cannot react quickly enough to meet their needs.
Food is donated by individuals, schools, churches and businesses and is sorted and stored for future use. Clients are issued with a voucher from front line professional care workers such as health care, social services, benefits agencies, pastoral care workers etc.
Clients can exchange vouchers for 3 days of nutritionally balanced emergency food. This food can be collected from the food from our distribution centre in Festival Church (Festival Park, Ebbw Vale) where clients find a safe place to chat over a hot drink and receive signposting to a range of support services such as debt counselling and life skills training.
Foodbank Ebbw Vale works in partnership with other charities and statutory agencies so that together we can deliver practical help at the point of need today. We therefore promote cooperative working between agencies working in similar fields; fostering a culture of “joined up thinking” and community cohesion.
More than just food ...
Foodbank Ebbw Vale acts as a “one stop shop” for people in crisis requiring emergency food aid supporting clients with a signposting service so that clients can access additional support to break the cycle of poverty.
Foodbank provides an immediate reaction to a crisis ultimately preventing people from becoming trapped in, debt, drug related issues and crime.
We are a vehicle to communicate key information to people in crisis, supporting health services through the identification of client's urgent health needs.
In addition the foodbank project also provides many diverse voluntary opportunities for those with all abilities. All volunteers are valued as key members of the team.
